Safe housing for LGBTI asylum seekers, Team Lead, Finalist, 2016

In 76 countries homosexuality is illegal. 1,500 LGBTI refugees from those countries come to the UK every year. When they come to the UK they are still not safe. Because of their sexuality, gender identity, gender expression or intersex status they often: – are abused in refugee accommodation by other refugees who often come from the same countries they are escaping from – become homeless and depressed – are rejected by their ethnic community and lived in poverty. To tackle the violence and homelessness faced by LGBTI asylum seekers in the UK, in 2017 Micro Rainbow opened the first safe house dedicated solely to LGBTI asylum seekers and refugees. Micro Rainbow now runs several houses across the UK which provide a safe and temporary shelter for all LGBTI asylum seekers and refugees.
